What to wear

What to wear

What to wear for a “CEO package”
Representing your look in the best light

There are a lot of stereotypes, do’s and don’t’ about what to wear for a photo shoot. Some might say that it is not a good idea to wear narrow stripes, busy patterns or layers of the same color because the camera does not pick them up well. We say throw these old ideals out of the window, it is an outdated way of thinking and it’s not a problem for a modern camera anymore. If you want you can wear it (and of course if it represents the style of the shoot)!

A few general tips:

  • Make sure your clothes are pressed and clean

  • Try new clothes on before photoshoot

  • Do not wear baggy, bulky, saggy or otherwise ill-fitting clothing

What to wear?

There is definitely no right answer to this, it will all depend on the following questions:

1. What these photos are for? (Why am I doing it?)
2. What are my personal preferences (style)?
3. How do I want to look on camera?

Let’s go through those questions together.

1. What these photos are for?

First, of course, you have to know and understand what these photos are for and where you plan to use them. It might be for your LinkedIn profile, for your company website, a new job you are applying for, or simply for yourself. You have to know your audience and what is appropriate or expected in those circles. Do your homework! For example, if it is a conservative law firm, then obviously a good suit would be a better fit than a t-shirt and jeans.  In one word you have to understand the environment around you when you are deciding on which outfits to bring to a shoot. Of course if your life and work require you to be conservative and casual at the same time, bring different varieties of clothes and the photographer can capture and show the different sides of you.

2. What are my personal preferences?

By this we mean that when you are thinking of what to wear to a shoot always rely on your own stylistic and individual preferences; you know yourself best! You might have your own favorite color that you would love to see on photos or you know that a midi length skirt fits your look better. Follow your own instincts and preferences, in the end you might be disappointed if you haven’t listened to yourself and your instincts when it comes to representing your individual and unique style.

3. How do I want to look on camera?

You will always have to consider your goals when you pick a perfect outfit. This is not just a photo shoot, but an investment in yourself and in your future! Don’t be shy, gather inspiration, and invest in yourself - even if that includes an outfit that you might’ve never bought before, but that you absolutely love, this is the opportunity to wear it! Through the camera, this is the opportunity to open and transform yourself, with the goal to open new professional doors, dreams, and opportunities!

If you are still hesitant on what to wear, we put together some looks for you to take a further look and be inspired!:

How to become a model in NYC

What is a Model Test?

A model test is a professional photoshoot where the main goal is to show the features of the model. To show her beauty, personality and ability to work on a camera, translating this into the photograph. A model test is a photoshoot for beginners as much as for professional working models; model test photoshoots are an integral part of the process and growth of all models. Beginners gain their experience on their first tests and will have beautiful photos as a result at the end, which can be used to further their career. More experienced professional models are required to do tests as well in order to show their current look at the moment for potential interested clients (since many times during a model’s career, they may be requested to change their hairstyle, etc - so updated photos representing a model’s current look is imperative).

What are model Polaroids / Digitals?

Usually, model Polaroids / Digitals are simple, clean photos taken against a white background, and the model will have a clean face with absolutely no makeup on. No posing or styling either, just the plain you! Your full body, face, and 3/4 profile are typically included in these digital/polaroid captures.

How often are Test Shoots completed?

If you started your path in the model industry, it will be typical for you to complete test photos approximately 1x a year, at least. Since you change, your look might also change, including your body, the way you act in front of the camera etc. Since clients will always need to see the current you when casting, to understand how you look at the moment and if it fits within their specific vision for the project. Additionally, test shoots are beneficial as it provides you with the opportunity to experiment and gain more experience in front of the camera.

What clothes should I prepare for a test shoot?

For a model test in New York, it will be best to incorporate a neutral wardrobe, this way the clothes won't take the attention away from the subject, you, the model! The goal of this shoot is not about overall styling, rather showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of the individual model themselves. The goal is to represent you as a unique individual! Highlighting your look and your ability to pose and feel comfortable in front of a camera. When you pick clothing, try to stick with monochromatic colors. Minimalism will always work best in testing! If you still have trouble deciding on what to bring for a shoot, here are some additional tips:

  • Plain white/gray t-shirt

  • White classic shirt

  • Jeans, denim outfits

  • Plain one colored swimsuit or very minimalistic

  • Black shaped dress, or any dress that fits you well

  • Black tights/leggings

  • Blazer

  • Clothes that highlight your figure best

  • High heels shoes

What makeup should be done on a test?

Usually, natural makeup is the number one option for a test. Again, clients and model agencies want to see your natural face features and individual beauty so they can better understand how to market your look for their projects, etc. You can most definitely have different makeup variations in your portfolio, but your main photo should have a very natural and minimal look, which captures the true essence of “you.”

How should I prepare myself for a Model test in NY?

There is nothing extraordinary that you could or should do. Just make sure that you slept well and you are not too tired or overstressed (the camera will always pick up on this!). You may do your own  research in terms of posing, if this is your first photoshoot and remember to practice in front of the mirror - extra practice and preparation can never hurt!

What will I do with the photos after?

If you are planning on trying a modeling career you should submit the photos to modeling agencies. Please be sure to read the agency's requirements first about the submission, including which photos they will need from you. Some might ask to send only headshots and full body shots, some agencies might ask you to send your polaroids first if you do an online submission or they may have no requirements at all! If a model agency contacts you make sure to bring all of your photos from the shoot. Photos could be previewed easily from your iPad or they could be printed, it’s your choice.

Of course there are many more modeling agencies that are not in these lists. There are a lot of smaller agencies who are still reputable and may be the stepping stone to finding a job, but the main goal, of course, will be to sign with a top agency, since it would more than likely guarantee more work which in turn equals a more successful career.

What is the best way to reach model agencies?

There are a few ways to do so. The first and most common way is online. Many of the agencies have online submission pages or a contact page where they have their email. Always check if the agency has its own requirements for the photos that you submit.

The second is an open call. Some agencies provide an open call once or twice a year. It is also a good opportunity to represent yourself in person and to meet with professional model bookers. Your personality is very important at this point because you will have an opportunity to demonstrate how you interact with others! Don't be too shy and don't be too intrusive either. To find out when an agency might have an open call, we suggest to follow their social media sites or frequently check their website. Agencies will announce an open call usually only a day or two in advance in order to avoid a big amount of people who might show up, since there are always hundreds of people who wouldn't mind trying their luck and the opportunity to fulfill their dreams!

Another way to sign with an agency is to be in the fashion circle. Network! The more time you spend with people who work within the industry, the more chance and opportunities that you will have to be noticed or someone you know may be able to introduce you to a modeling agency. If you live in a big city it is not that hard to do. If you really put your heart into the fashion industry you will always be able to find an interesting artist with whom you might start collaborating together. Designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, other models are pretty often open for collaboration if you are an engaging person and have something unique to offer. In one word don't just sit home and wait to be discovered! If you want to pursue a modeling career you will have to be willing to work hard and start making these first steps on your own, believing in yourself is the first key to success!

What if agencies don't reply to me?

There are not that many reasons why an agency might not reply you on your submission. First and foremost the most common reason is that your look doesn't fit within their modeling requirements at that time. This doesn't mean that you are not good enough for them; sometimes, different agencies will have different requirements and will be looking for different looks at different times depending on the needs of their clients. For example, some agencies may be looking for an edgier high-fashion look, and some are only interested in a more commercial look. Additionally, the agencies might already have individuals who are similar to your look and will be unable to sign you at the moment. Another possibility of why they might not answer you right away is that they have too many submission at the moment, they will always keep your work on file, and feel free to continuously send updated portfolios as your work progresses.

How to start modeling?

The best suggestion? Don’t be upset if you don’t hear back right away! Keep submitting your applications to them as you improve your work and update your portfolio. Success takes hard work, time, and dedication to your craft!
